board: ELECTED MARGARET SMITH as board vice president for the 2002-03 school year. recognized Carol Hodgins, director of pupil personnel services, and Jean Rose, high school English teacher. Both are retiring. Hearings/Privilege of the Floor: None The following represents actions taken by the Board of Education at a regular meeting held on August 12, 2002, at the District Office. The Board of Education: 1. HEARD a curriculum report from Carol Hodgins, director of pupil personnel services, about the guidance department. 2. HEARD a report from Mrs. Hodgins about the district plan regarding special education, 2002-2004. 3. DISCUSSED the results of the grade 4 ELA and grade 8 ELA exams. Middle School Principal Shari Keller and Academic Head for English Lee Ann Napolitano discussed strategies they have for improving scores. 4. DISCUSSED an after-school at-risk proposal with Middle School Principal Shari Keller. 5. HEARD an update on the facilities projects from Tom Clavin and Carl Stewart from Turner Construction. Clavin said the elementary school work is proceeding and he expects classrooms at Glendaal, Lincoln and Sacandaga to be ready for the opening of school; other aspects of the elementary work will be completed through October. 6. APPROVED a total 2002-2003 tax levy of $17,874,819 to be raised proportionately among the three towns comprising the school district and the State from STAR reimbursement in accordance with Real Property Tax Law §1314, as follows: Town . APPROVED the resolution, dated August 12, 2002, to accept the gift and donation in the amount of $20,000 from the Scotia-Glenville Booster Club for the purchase of equipment for the Senior High School Fitness Center. 9. APPROVED the resolution, dated August 12, 2002, to accept the gift and donation in the amount of $6,000 from the First National Bank of Scotia for the purchase of equipment for the Senior High School Fitness Center. 10. Communications a) ACCEPTED the letter of resignation of Valerie Buchanan, part-time reading teacher (Middle School), effective July 29, 2002, with appreciation for her service to the district b) ACCEPTED the letter of resignation of Jennifer Moreau, elementary teacher (Glendaal School), effective July 31, 2002, with appreciation for her service to the district. c) ACCEPTED the letter of resignation of Robert Loggins, industrial arts teacher/dean of students (Middle School), effective c.o.b. Report of Superintendent a. Staffing All appointments marked with an * are conditioned on the school districts receipt of clearance for the employee from the State Education Department following a criminal history records check in accordance with the provision of Education Law §3035. 1) APPROVED the change in the probationary appointments of Lisa M. Bourassa from social studies teacher (60% basis) (Senior High) and foreign language teacher (40% basis) (Junior High), effective September 1, 2001 through August 30, 2004, to foreign language teacher (100%), effective September 1, 2002 through April 6, 2004, with no change in her annual 2002-2003 salary. Ms. Bourassa has provisional certification. 2) APPROVED the probationary appointment of Christina Ramnes as elementary teacher (Glendaal School), effective September 1, 2002 through August 31, 2004, with 2002-2003 salary to be at the annual rate of $37,255 (Step 3 + M). Ms. Ramnes has provisional certification. 3) APPROVED* the probationary appointment of Mark Mortensen as elementary teacher (Sacandaga School), effective September 1, 2002 through August 31, 2005, with 2002-2003 salary to be at the annual rate of $33,500 (Step 1). Mr. Mortensen has provisional certification. 4) APPROVED* the probationary appointment of John Leighton as science (biology) teacher, GOAL Program, (Senior High School), effective September 1, 2002 through August 31, 2005, with 2002-2003 salary to be at the annual rate of $36,206 (Step 4). Mr. Leighton has conditional provisional certification. 5) APPROVED* the Regular Substitute appointment of Amanda L. Faulkner as English teacher (Senior High School), effective September 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003, with 2002-2003 salary at the annual rate of $38,409 (Step 5 +M +6). Ms. Faulkner has permanent certification. 6) APPROVED* the part-time appointment of Carron M. Maston as social studies teacher (Middle School), effective September 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003, with 2002-2003 salary to be at the annual rate of $ 35,910.40 (Step 10 +M +7, 80% basis). Ms. Maston has permanent certification. 7) APPROVED the part-time appointment of Adrienne Hall as art teacher (Districtwide), effective September 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003, with 2002-2003 salary to be at the annual rate of $20,764.20 (Step 1 +41, 60% basis). Mrs. Hall is eligible for provisional certification. 8) APPROVED* the part-time appointment of Jennifer Fischer as music teacher (Middle School), effective September 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003, with 2002-2003 salary to be at the annual rate of $6,937.80 (Step 2 +10, 20% basis). Ms. Fischer has provisional certification. 9) APPROVED the change in the 2002-2003 annual salary of Gina M.
