The following is a list of scholarships available for your consideration. Please take notice of the guidance deadlines on this memo for these scholarships. SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS MUST BE TURNED IN TO THE GUIDANCE OFFICE BY THE GUIDANCE DEADLINE FOR PROCESSING.

IMAGINE AMERICA - www.imagine-america.org for assistance with career choices, ways to pay for college, online education, distance learning and career colleges and information about the Military Award Program, check out this site. You may apply at anytime.

 

WENDY'S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN AWARD - if you are currently a senior with a "B" average and participate in one of the twenty-seven sanctioned school sports - you may be eligible for this award. For additional information and the application, look online at www.wendysheisman.com. You must apply online before October 1, 2009 and have a school representative (guidance counselor) review and confirm your application prior to October 6, 2009. If you plan to apply, let your counselor know in advance!

 

THE HORATIO ALGER SCHOLARSHIPS - offers assistance to students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record (2.0 GPA), commitment to pursue a college education and a desire to contribute to society. Apply online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships and request all additional information from Guidance by October 23, 2009.

 

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION - MOST VALUABLE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP - has been established to help students fulfill their academic dreams and become active members of their communities. There are 500 four-year awards available to high school seniors who are US citizens. Applications which are judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need, are available online at www.elks.org, in the guidance office and at the local Elks Lodge. Please have completed applications to Guidance by October 26, 2009.

 

COCA-COLA SCHOARS PROGRAM - is offering awards of $20,000.00 and $10,000.00 to over 250 students who have a thirst for knowledge and want to make a difference. The application and guidelines are online at www.coca-colascholars.org – preview the questions so you know what information is needed from parents and counselors. All completed applications are to be submitted by October 31, 2009 - make certain you come to Guidance at least a week before (10/23/09) to procure the information you will need.

 

THE VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD - is offered by Soroptimist International of Schenectady which is a business and professional women's service club. Young women who are compassionate and committed to volunteer efforts that address issues such as homelessness, violence, drug abuse, illiteracy, disadvantaged youth, discrimination, AIDS, terminal illness, elder care, and pollution would be eligible for this award of $300.00 and the organization for which she volunteers would receive $200.00. Applications are available in Guidance and all requests for supporting materials (letters of reference, transcripts, etc.) must be made by November 19, 2009.

 

AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP - for information and applications, visit www.axa-achievement.com. Enter early as only the first 12,000 applications will be considered. If you have achieved a long-term accomplishment or project in school, community or your workplace and have participated in extra-curricular activities this may be the scholarship for you. To apply, print the application, complete it and have an adult complete the appraisal. You will need to include a current, complete transcript of your grades which must be requested from Guidance by December 8, 2009.

 

THE NEW YORK WATER ENVIRONMENT ASSOCIATION, INC. - is offering $19,000.00 in scholarships for those students who will be pursuing an education in an environmentally related subject. Visit the website at www.nywea.org/school for additional information and the applications. The Major Environmental Career Scholarship is worth $10,000.00 over 4 years to a qualifying senior who is a New York State resident and will enroll in a full-time program with an environmental emphasis. The 2010 $1,500.00 Scholarship Application Package offers 2 scholarships each for: 1. children of members, 2. students enrolling at college with a NYWEA Chapter, and 3. students who will enroll in an environmental program. Guidance deadline is January 14, 2010.

NEW YORK STATE PTA - is offering the Jenkins Memorial Scholarship to students who plan to prepare for a teaching career by attending a college of the State University of New York. The award is $3,000.00. Points of interest: students must not have already accepted scholarships in excess of $16,000.00; must be enrolled in a school with a PTA in good standing; recipient must complete teaching degree and receive recommendation for teacher certification from the degree-granting institution; character, personality, academic achievement and potential teaching ability are criteria. Applications are available in Guidance and at the NYS PTA website www.nyspta.org. All requests for information must be in Guidance by January 7, 2010 for processing as the applications are due to NYS PTA by January 15, 2010.

 

MENSA OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK - is offering applications for the Mensa Education & Research Foundation College Scholarship Program. These awards are based solely on essays, there is no consideration given to grades, academic program or financial need. It is not necessary to be a Mensa member to apply for these scholarships. Apply online at www.mensafoundation.org/scholarships or you may come to Guidance for an application. The essays must be postmarked by January 15, 2010.

 

SEFCU & CUANY (State Employees Federal Credit Union & Credit Union Association of New York) - are offering scholarships to students who are primary members on an account. If you plan to attend a 2 or 4 year college for the first time in the Fall of 2010 you may apply for these awards by emailing marketing@sefcu.com or calling 518-451-2897 for an application packet. Applicants will be judged on academic performance, extra-curricular, community and volunteer activities, and quality and content of written essay. Any information needed from Guidance must be requested by January 15, 2010.

 

BURGER KING SCHOLARS PROGRAM - is offering scholarships of $1,000.00 each to eligible high school seniors. To apply, log on at www.haveityourwayfoundation.org/bksp_application.html (access key is BKS). Print out the completed application and bring it to Guidance for any additional letters, transcripts, test scores by January 22, 2010. Applicants must: maintain a GPA of 2.5, work part time, be involved in community service, demonstrate financial need, and plan to enroll in an accredited two/or four year accredited college, university or vocational/technical school in the Fall of 2010.

 

SAM WALTON COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP - is being offered by Walmart. Criteria includes: being a U.S. citizen or legal resident; may not be a Walmart Stores, Inc. Associate or a dependent of a Walmart Stores, Inc. Associate; must be a high school senior with a GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale; must plan to enroll in a two- or four-year college within the U.S. and must demonstrate financial need. The application is available at www.act.org/walmart/community/ or in Guidance. All applications are due in Guidance by January 22, 2010 for submission.

 

DAR NATIONAL SOCIETY (DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION) - is offering the following scholarships: to apply you must send a request to committee Services Office, Attention: Scholarships, 1776 D Street, NW, Washington, DC 20006-5303 and include a stamped, self-addressed return envelope. Send your request early:

   
  • AMERICAN INDIAN SCHOLARSHIPS - are available to those students who can prove they are Native Americans and proof of American Indian blood. THE AMERICAN INDIAN SCHOLARSHIP is based on financial need and academic achievement; it is a one-time $1,000.00 award with a Guidance deadline of March 26, 2010. THE FRANCES CRAWFORD MARVIN AMERICAN INDIAN SCHOLARSHIP is available to students who are Native Americans, enrolling in a 2 or 4 year college/university, demonstrate financial need and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The amount of this award is based on the return on an endowment and may vary year to year. The Guidance deadline is January 25, 2010.
   
  • POLITICAL SCIENCE, HISTORY, GOVERNMENT, AND ECONOMICS - HOBBS PITTENGER AMERICAN HISTORY SCHOLARSHIP - for $2,000.00 per year for four years, and THE HALL GRISWOLD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is a one-time award for $1,000.00, both have a February 4, 2010 Guidance deadline.
   
  • NURSING SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS - CAROLINE E. HOLT NURSING SCHOLARSHIP - undetermined amount for those who demonstrate financial need and are accepted into an accredited school of nursing. Guidance deadline is February 4, 2010.
 

CARGILL COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP - is a $1,000.00 scholarship to the student and a $200.00 gift to the school library. If you are interested in agriculture and/or food sciences, plan to attend Delhi or Cobleskill, this is the scholarship to go for! Apply online at https://scholarshipapp.ffa.org/OnlineApps/Welcome.aspx or come to Guidance for the application information. Completed applications must be returned to Guidance by February 8, 2010 to be submitted for the Cargill signature.

 

ZONTA CLUB OF SCHENECTADY - is a member of Zonta International, an organization of executive and professional women performing service throughout the world. This year the organization is offering two (2) awards for outstanding community service and academic achievement is not a selection factor. The application for both the Jean M. Coon Humanitarian Award ($400.00) and the Young Women in Public Affairs Award ($400.00) are available in Guidance. Each one has a Guidance due date of February 8, 2010.

 

THE DOROTHEA DEITZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - is sponsored by Women in Physical Education in New York State. Young women residing in New York State who are planning to major in Physical Education Teacher Education are eligible for these awards which range from $4,500.00 to $6,500.00. These scholarships will be awarded on the basis of character, academic achievement, physical education competence, participation in athletics, qualities of leadership and financial need. Applications are available from the area DDMS chairperson, Janet Tully-Kuzman's email at JLTULLY9@yahoo.com or from the NYSAHPERD website www.nysahperd.org. Completed applications are due to the chairperson by March 1, 2010. Please allow a month to get the required information and references. The Guidance deadline for information is February 12, 2010.

 

RANDOM HOUSE, INC. - DR. SEUSS'S - OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO! COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - have you thought about the challenges and opportunities your future will present? If so, earn a $5,000 scholarship award for the college of your choice, write your personal essay (no more than 500 words), complete the application that is available in Guidance or download application available on their website www.ohtheplaces.org, and send in your entry to Random House before February 15, 2010.

 

THE NATIONAL COMMISION FOR COOPERATIVE EDUCATION - is offering merit co-op scholarships of $6,000.00 each which are renewable for 3 years at the following universities: Drexel University, Johnson & Wales University, Kettering University, Pace University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo, and Wentworth Institute of Technology. To apply for the merit scholarship, you must apply, be accepted and attend one of those universities (submitting your college application early is advised). Additional information about the scholarship program and the online application are available at www.co-op.edu. The completed application and essay are due to NCCE by February 15, 2010, any information needed from Guidance (transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc.) must be requested by February 1, 2010.

 

2010 PDK PROSPECTIVE EDUCATOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - Phi Delta Kappa Chapter #0135 is offering scholarships to high school seniors planning to major in education. There are several offerings available on the website www.pdkintl.org or in Guidance. Submission deadline to Guidance is February 22, 2010.

 

THE ASSOCIATION OF FIRE DISTRICTS OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK - is pleased to announce the "Ned" Carter Scholarship. There are three awards of $1,500.00 to be awarded in three districts. Applicants must be related to or be a Firefighter in an affiliated member organization of the AFDSNY and must reside within New York State. The applications are available online at www.firedistnys.com or in Guidance. All requests for application materials must be made to Guidance by February 26, 2010.

 

FIRST NEW YORK FEDERAL CREDIT UNION - is offering three one-time scholarships to members who meet the following criteria: 1. must be a First NY Federal Credit Union member in good standing; 2. must be a graduating high school senior; 3. must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college; 4. must be an active volunteer and/or active in the community. Come to Guidance for the application, write the essay and have everything back to Guidance by March 4, 2010 for submission.

 

2010 SCHOLAR ATHLETE MILK MUSTACHE OF THE YEAR (SAMMY) AWARDS - sponsored by USA Today, are now available at www.bodybymilk.com. All student athletes are encouraged to apply! You may also have a coach, teacher, counselor, parent or other relative nominate you. If you are on top of your game in academics, sport and community service, this is a great opportunity for you. Apply now through March 5, 2010.

 

PRICE CHOPPER'S GOLUB FOUNDATION - is offering eight scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to attend college as fully matriculated first year students for the Fall of 2010 semester. The application and procedures are available online at www.pricechopper.com. All applications must be in Guidance by March 8, 2010 for submission to Price Chopper. This application requires an original essay and three letters of recommendation.

 

BERKSHIRE BANK FOUNDATION 2010 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - is offering 3 scholarships of $2,000.00 each to area students who have a record of volunteerism, participate in extra-curricular school activities, a minimum GPA of 3.0, family income under $75,000.00, and plan to attend a two- or four-year college or a technical school. Applications may be downloaded from http://www.berkshirebank.com or may be picked up in Guidance. The Guidance due date is March 22, 2010 for completion and submission.

NEW YORK WATER ENVIRONMENT ASSOCIATION CAPITAL CHAPTER - R. PAUL FARRELL JR. SCHOLARSHIP - these two scholarships for students enrolled in an environmental related curriculum at the undergraduate level. Each application consists of a transcript, two references, completed application, list of honors, awards, curricular, extra-curricular and community services and an essay. Applications are available in Guidance and must be returned to Guidance by March 23, 2010 for completion and submission.

ANNA HUDSON ERBACHER SCHOLARSHIP - is available to graduating seniors of Schenectady County who intend to pursue a career in teaching. This scholarship is for $3,500.00 per year for up to four years, subject to continued qualifications. Final selection of the recipient will be based on scholarship, financial need, character, and extra-curricular and community activities. Applications are available in Guidance and must be returned to Guidance by March 23, 2010 for submission.

EDNA MARWILL GRANT - ALPHA KAPPA CHAPTER OF DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL - includes a Certificate of Merit and $500.00 in grant money. This award is offered to academically talented female students who intend to pursue college study leading to teacher certification and consider becoming a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, any international organization of women educators. To apply, please submit the following:

  1. an updated resume including future goals
  2. three letters of recommendation from the following - guidance counselor, school administrator, teacher or an adult outside of school
  3. high school transcript and a photograph

THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR THE GREATER CAPITAL REGION - is offering the following awards: to students whose educational and career goals are committed to the principles of an educated citizenry for responsible roles within the workforce and the creation of a corporate citizenship promoting the importance of community service and participation in community affairs.   1. LEONARD K. DOVIAK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS - are available to students entering a two- or four-year college in any field of study and who have a GPA ranging between 75% and 85%. Applications are available in Guidance or at the website www.cfcr.org /grants and scholarships/scholarships. Please have the completed application turned in to Guidance by March 30, 2010 for completion and submission.
  2. TIMES UNION COMMUNICATIONS SCHOLARSHIP - a $1,000.00 is available to students entering a two- or four-year college in the Fall of 2010 to study journalism or a communications-related field. Applications and additional information are available in Guidance or at the website www.cfcr.org /grants and scholarships/scholarships.
  3. THE TRANSTECH-SOLID SURFACE CRAFTSMAN SKILLED TRADES SCHOLARSHIP - is a $1,000.00 scholarship to be awarded to a student entering a certificate of apprenticeship program, two- or four-year college/university in the Fall of 2010 to study a skilled trade. Applications and additional information are available in Guidance or at the website www.cfcr.org /grants and scholarships/scholarships.
  4. THE DOWN SYNDROME AIM HIGH SCHOLARSHIP - is a $2,000.00 scholarship to be awarded to a student whose goal is to work with and/or for individuals with Down Syndrome in the future. Applications and additional information are available in Guidance or at the website www.cfcr.org /grants and scholarships/scholarships.
  5. THE AD CLUB - is offering up to $3,000.00 to a student or students who will attend an accredited, local area, four-year college in Fall of 2010 and be enrolled in a communications field of study. All applications must be in to Guidance by May 7, 2010 for completion and submission.
  6. THE MICHAEL J. CAMPBELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - is being offered to a graduating senior currently enrolled in High School Vocational Education Program and who plans to attend an accredited two or four-year college in pursuit of an Associate's Degree in Construction. Additional information and applications are available in Guidance and online at www.cfcr.org /grants and scholarships/scholarships. All applications must be in to Guidance by April 21, 2010 for completion and submission.
  7. THE RUTH GOLDSTEIN MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP - of $500.00 is being offered to a graduating senior who will continue musical studies at either a two- or four-year college/university. Additional information and applications are available in Guidance and online at www.cfcr.org /grants and scholarships/scholarships. All applications must be in to Guidance by April 21, 2010 for completion and submission.
  8. THE GENE ROBB JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP - of $1,000.00 is being offered to graduating seniors who plan to attend and accredited four-year college, majoring in Journalism. Applicants must provide samples of journalistic work, scholastic achievement will be strongly considered as will community and social involvement. Recommendations are required. THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF ALBANY, INC. - is offering the Rockwell Scholarship Award. It is available to a female resident of the Capital District who is currently involved in volunteer organizations which serve the same or related focus areas as the Junior League of Albany's focus areas. The award will be no less than $1,000.00. Please come to Guidance for the application information. All applications are due back to Guidance by March 24, 2010 for submission. CAPITAL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION - 2010 GRACE R. MCIVER EDUCATION AWARD - is being offered to a student from the Capital District who is planning a career in public education. Each applicant must submit a typed 450 - 600 word essay entitled "Education - What I Can Contribute" along with a cover sheet. Additional information is available in Guidance and essays are due in Guidance by March 24, 2010 for submission.

 

THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CLARENCE "FRITZ" NEUMANN COLLEGE TUITION ASSISTANCE AWARD - in the amount of $1,000.00 is being offered to students who have shown strong community service and established goals. Applications and additional information are available in Guidance. Completed material must be returned to Guidance by March 24, 2010 for processing.

THE HUDSON RIVER COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION - HRCCU will be awarding four $1,000.00 college scholarships in 2010. To be considered for the award, eligible candidates must be a HRCCU member-in-good-standing and a graduating high school senior planning to attend an accredited college or university in the Fall of 2010. Applicants are judged on academic performance, honors/awards, extra-curricular activities, leadership roles, community involvement, employment experience and essay question. Applications are available at the website www.hrccu.org and are due in Guidance by March 25, 2010 for completion and submission.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION - is offering $500.00 scholarships to qualified high school seniors who plan to enroll in an accredited college in a construction-related degree program. These awards are based on need, merit and review of transcript. Applications are available in Guidance and completed applications are due back in Guidance by April 1, 2010 for submission.

COLLEGE OF ST. ROSE - SCHENECTADY CHAPTER OF THE COLLEGE ALUMNI - J. RAYMOND QUINN JR. - is offering an award of $1,000.00 to a student who will attend the College of St. Rose. The criteria for determining the recipient are scholastic record, test scores, essay, and participation in school and community activities. ADIRONDACK MOUNTAIN CLUB - SCHENECTADY CHAPTER - is offering a $500.00 scholarship to a senior in the Schenectady area who has shown an interest in the environment and protection of the environment and plans to pursue a college degree in a field such as forestry, marine biology, chemical engineering, or environmental science. Students may come to Guidance for application information. The completed essay and application are due to the club by April 5, 2010.

 

ECOS BIOSPHERE AWARD 2010 - this annual $500.00 award is to be presented for the best entry of a Nature Journal and is open to high school seniors who will be attending either a two- or four-year college in the Fall of 2010. The rules and additional information are available in Guidance. Submission deadline is 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Niskayuna Recreation Center located at 2682 Aqueduct Road, Niskayuna, NY.

COUNTY OF SCHENECTADY HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION RALPH F. BOYD AWARD - is to be awarded to a senior in Schenectady County who has demonstrated a commitment on time and effort in some academics, attendance, and school citizenship - serving as a role model to other students. To be considered for this award, students must submit a one-page statement of the qualifications which describes the involvement with education and with human/civil rights, and a one-page letter of support from a faculty member. These must be submitted to Guidance by April 12, 2010.

THE AMY BINDELGLASS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - is being offered by the Center for Donation & Transplant. To apply, type a convincing, persuasive essay on the topic Should Earlier Self-destructive Behavior That Led to a Loss of Organ Function be a Factor in Determining Whether or not a Person Should Receive a New Organ? Submissions must be postmarked by April 15, 2010. Please come to Guidance for additional information.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS - MOHAWK-HUDSON SECTION REGION 1 - is offering a four-year, $1,000.00 per year scholarship to a deserving student who wants to become a practicing civil engineer. Seniors who intend to enroll in an educational institution majoring in a curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE) are invited to apply. THE AMERICAN DISABLED VETERANS - LT. VIBERT O. FRYER CHAPTER 88 - is an award of $250.00 to be given to the student who shows evidence of outstanding leadership skills, community service., and patriotism. BAPTIST HEALTH SYSTEM FOUNDATION - is offering a $2,500.00 scholarship to a high school senior who is planning to enter an accredited program of study with a concentration in health care related human services. ALBANY COUNTY LOCAL 801 - GEORGE SHEFFIELD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - is being offered to children of CSEA Local 801 members. This scholarship is available to students who will graduate in June 2010, have a 3.0 GPA and have proof of acceptance to a two- or four-year college, university or trade school. Criteria for acceptance include academic record, school activities and financial necessity. Applications are available in Guidance and completed forms are to be returned to Guidance by April 26, 2010.

THE REV. R. MANSFIELD STARKS' $1,500.00 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - is being offered by the Church of The Immaculate Conception, Glenville, NY to a student who is an active member of the church, and active member of the school and community, plans to attend a two- or four-year college and is an average or above average student. Applications are available at the church office and in Guidance. All completed applications must be returned to the office at The Church of The Immaculate Conception by Friday, May 7, 2010.

This award is presented to youth who have demonstrated personal courage by taking positive action against racism, prejudice and bias-related violence in school or community. HOBY Leadership Seminar Information

THE HUGH O'BRIAN YOUTH LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION - is looking for sophomores interested in attending the HOBY Leadership Seminar to be held in the Spring of 2010. The purpose of the seminar is to bring together high school sophomores who have demonstrated leadership ability so that they can interact with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education, and the professions to discuss present and future issues. During these seminars, 10th graders have the opportunity to meet, interact with, and question regionally, nationally, and internationally renowned leaders. HOBY Leadership Seminars are three- to four-day weekend events.

After your HOBY Leadership Seminar, you will be eligible to attend the World Leadership Congress to be held in July 2010.
