Tips for parents regarding the H1N1 (swine) flu

  • Wash your hands and your children’s hands frequently. It is best to use liquid soap and water or non-alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Cover coughs - do not cough or sneeze into your hands; use a tissue or cough or sneeze into the crook of your arm.
  • The Yard Stick Rule – stay 3 feet (a yard stick) away from somebody who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Stay home when sick - Flu-like symptoms include a fever of more than 100 degrees F., feverishness, cough, sore throat, runny nose, or stuffy nose. Additional symptoms may be experienced with swine flu, including muscle pain, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Keep children home who have flu-like illness until 24 hours after the fever is gone (without medication)
  • Report your child’s flu-like illness to school
  • Do not treat children with flu-like illness with aspirin
  • Keep up to date with flu guidance at www.flu.gov and www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu
