For its fall production, the drama club performed “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) for an audience of over 300 family, friends, community members, and SGHS students.
The two-act play combines portions of all 37 Shakespeare plays in 97 minutes. Interspersed with modern-day references and set in a “play within a play” format, students performed a variety of Shakespeare characters, from Romeo & Juliet to Hamlet. Directed by Michael Camelo, “our cast of almost 20 students memorized dozens of pages of Shakespeare’s dialogue, performing at a breakneck speed with lots of laughs along the way. Our entirely student-run tech crew made sure that the performers were well-lit and well-heard, and kept things running smoothly backstage.”
This production helped make Shakespeare more accessible. It brought his words to life for those seeing his work for the first time, as well as lifelong fans. The English Department encouraged students to attend and gave extra credit toward their grade to the ones who did.
