Scotia-Glenville High School is thrilled to announce its first-ever Job Fair & Career Exploration event, taking place on Thursday, Jan. 16. This initiative, organized by the inaugural S-G cohort of students who will be graduating with the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness, will offer SGHS students a valuable opportunity to connect with nearly 25 local businesses and organizations.

The Senior Civics Capstone course, a vital element of the Civic Readiness Seal, acknowledges students for their civic knowledge, skills, mindset, and experiences through comprehensive action research projects. This year, approximately 20 SGHS students will be recognized with the seal for showcasing their dedication to civic responsibility and active participation in government.

“During our class brainstorming session, we identified the lack of job opportunities for students as a common concern, which led us to create the job fair. I’ve learned a lot from planning the job fair, and doing research on the topic, for instance I’ve worked on my communication skills from reaching out to businesses and companies,” said senior Emily Heiner.

Marissa Gordon, Academic Head of English and Social Studies, expressed her pride in the students’ accomplishments: “There are moments in education that remind us why we do what we do, and this is one of them. I have been so impressed with our students’ dedication to creating a successful event. It is something they should be really proud of,” she said.

The goal of the event is to empower students by presenting them with a range of employment opportunities within the community. Following a class visit to the state Capitol last month, civics student Finn Farnan secured an internship with Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara’s office, click here for story. A representative from the assemblyman’s office will be participating in the S-G job fair, alongside local businesses such as Schrader and Company, Sage’s Circle, and Mountain Ridge Adventure. Social Studies teacher Conor Quinn and English teacher Kerry Saati, who developed the new Senior Civics Capstone course at SGHS, have been impressed by the students’ initiative. “It’s been great to see students take the lead on a project of this size. They’ve worked hard to tackle an issue that affects many their age,” said Mr. Quinn. Mrs. Saati added, “Watching the students invest themselves in this project and their community has been inspiring. I am so proud of their independence and confidence.”

Students involved in the planning have expressed their excitement for the event. Senior Katie Crounse noted, “The job fair will allow many students to learn about employment opportunities in our community. This class has taught me a deeper understanding of the issues we face and how to make a positive impact.” Fellow senior Maddie Gish said, “This is an amazing opportunity for teenagers in Scotia-Glenville and local businesses looking for part-time or summer workers.”

The Job Fair & Career Exploration event is an excellent opportunity for media representatives to cover an engaging and impactful experience for Scotia-Glenville High School students. The presence of reporters will not only enhance the visibility of the event but also allow students to share their personal stories and aspirations as they interact with potential employers.

Interviews with students will provide insights into their career exploration journeys, offering a glimpse into the challenges they face and the excitement of discovering various career paths. This engagement can highlight the importance of such events in shaping the future workforce and can inspire other students to participate in similar opportunities.

Media coverage can also spotlight the employers attending the event, showcasing their commitment to nurturing young talent and the diverse career options available in the community. Ultimately, the blend of student interviews and employer engagement creates a compelling narrative that resonates with a wide audience.
