“We are thrilled to share the success of our girls soccer program’s recent fundraising efforts,” said Superintendent Swartz. “This program has always been dedicated to not only developing skilled athletes but also responsible citizens who positively contribute to their community. They have taken commitment to community service to the next level, and the results are truly inspiring,” she said.
Over the summer, coaches Maggie Healy, Julie Myers, and Macee Maddock discussed various service projects for the girls with a focus on supporting local organizations. With this year’s athletic program initiative emphasizing the importance of service and teamwork, they were determined to make those words ring true.
After careful consideration, they selected two organizations as beneficiaries of their fundraising initiatives: the Lioness Retreat and the Schenectady County Child Advocacy Center. The Lioness Retreat, also known as the Pride Cancer Retreat, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a sanctuary for healing, fostering connections, and regaining a sense of confidence following a breast or gynecological cancer diagnosis and/or treatment. The Schenectady County Child Advocacy Center facilitates coordinated, multidisciplinary team investigations of child abuse, providing crucial support for children throughout their healing journey.
“We are proud to announce that we were able to present the Schenectady County Child Advocacy Center with a donation of $1,052 and the Lioness Retreat with a donation of $1,324. These contributions will directly impact the crucial work of these organizations and make a meaningful difference in our community.” Coach Maggie Healy
The fundraising included hosting a 5K event on the school campus in support of the Schenectady County Child Advocacy Center. The event brought together all three soccer teams for a fun afternoon of conditioning and games while supporting a great cause. Additionally, they organized a “Pink Pride-Pink Out” game to raise funds and awareness for the Lioness Retreat. Coach Healy said, “There is a deep connection to the Lioness Retreat with our modified coach, Macee Maddock, a breast cancer survivor whose experience there was transformative. Her story resonated, having personal ties to breast cancer through my family & as a ‘previvor.’ Additionally, October is breast cancer awareness month, so we felt this was the perfect time.”
