Support for G-W as we head back to school

Dear Parents / Guardian,

As we approach the beginning of a new school year, I understand that many of us are still mourning the tragic death of Principal Nick Criscone. As I continue to hold Nick close in heart, I believe the best thing we can do in his honor is make certain we are prepared for the start of the new school year.

Mrs. Ann Comley, former principal at Lincoln and Sacandaga Elementary Schools, has returned as interim principal. Mrs. Comley will be with us through early December as we recruit and hire a principal for Glen-Worden. Ann knows many of our staff, is familiar with the operation of our schools and the district, and will see that staff, students, and families have what they need as the school year gets underway. If your schedule allows, please feel free to stop in at Glen-Worden, with your children, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4, to meet Principal Comley and say hello. Though staff will be in the school, this will not be a time to visit classrooms.

A grief counselor from Schenectady County Hospice will be present as school reopens for students on Thursday, September 5 and Friday, September 6. If a teacher sees a student in need who might benefit from some time with the grief counselor, the teacher will provide an opportunity for the student to meet them. Our plan is to take our cues from individual students in meeting their needs.

We will carefully monitor our students during those two days to determine if extra support is needed and will respond accordingly as we plan for the first full-week of school. The individuals who worked with us immediately after Principal Criscone’s passing will continue to guide us as students return. I am grateful for their continued presence and support.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. We are here to support one another and our students by fostering a caring and resilient school environment.

Sincerely,

Susan M. Swartz, Superintendent
